South Branch Connectivity Project: Framework Plan

Changing land use on the South Branch of the Chicago River presents a unique opportunity to reimagine McKinley Park’s relationship to its riverfront, opening spaces that have been closed to the public for over 100 years.

This framework plan is our largest project to date, envisioning a continuous bicycle and pedestrian path from Western Avenue in McKinley Park to Ping Tom Park in Chinatown. It capitalizes on Chicago’s River Design Guidelines to improve traffic safety, increase access to public transportation, create new greenspace, and provide recreation opportunities.

Funded by a grant from Chicago Community Trust and forged in collaboration with over 600 neighbors, this collaborative effort represents a major step toward enhancing the quality of life for residents of McKinley Park, Bridgeport, Armour Square/Chinatown, Brighton Park, Little Village, and Pilsen.
