Central Manufacturing District

The Central Manufacturing District was the first planned manufacturing district of its size, begun in 1905 and greatly expanded to support the war effort in WWI. Today’s residents want to see new life in the CMD, so we worked with University of Illinois Chicago to create a vision for it.

This vision has already been employed by the City of Chicago to set design requirements for the redevelopment of one of the CMD’s iconic red brick buildings, 1769 W. Pershing Road. In addition, MPDC organized residents to ensure they were heard in meetings with the city. As a result, the city ultimately selected neighbors’ preferred proposal, a mixed-use plan that includes residential units, small commercial spaces, and new retail.
