Walk With Us to Improve Walking and Biking!
Starting Wednesday, September 18, MPDC will be hosting a series of walks to take stock of walking and biking options in McKinley Park, Pilsen, Bridgeport, and Chinatown. The goal is to document problems with streets, sidewalks, bike lanes, and other basic infrastructure, so we can push for improvements.
We have a lot of streets to cover, and we need your help!
What: First Walk Audit to Improve Pedestrian and Cycling Conditions
Additional walks to come every Wednesday in September and October.
When: Wednesday, September 18 at 6:30 PM
Where: McKinley Park Public Library, 1915 W 35th St
What to expect: We'll gather inside the library for a brief presentation, snacks, and instructions. Then we'll go for a walk to assess 35th St.
What to bring: Wear good walking shoes and bring your smartphone
How it works: Neighbors will walk one block at a time. For each block, we'll complete an online form and take pictures of problems and unique features on the block. MPDC will provide a map of which areas to cover, and walks will continue until all blocks on the map are documented.
Data collected will be used to:
Request specific improvements for traffic safety and comfort
Determine future designated paths to and from the riverfront
Create wayfinding signage in McKinley Park, Pilsen, Bridgeport, and Chinatown
Seek funding for new public amenities including artwork, accessibility improvements, and greenspace
Make walking and biking better on the Southwest Side!
Join us, and bring a friend or neighbor!
